 Department News

 

Installation of Our Wind Turbine: The skyline over VMC will be transformed on November 13, 2008 as our small-scale wind turbine is installed on our school. Congrats to the Sustainable Development Committee for successfully sprearheading this initiative over the past few years. Here is a video of the installation.

 

 


 

 

2007-08 Department Initiatives 

 

Canadian Battlefield of Europe EF Tour: On Sunday, March 23, 2008, 35 students and 5 social studies teachers will be embarking on a ten-day tour of Canada's First and Second World War battlefields throughout selective locations in France and Belgium. The group will also be touching base in the Netherlands to visit Anne Frank's House and The Hague before heading back to Winnipeg on April 1, 2008. To keep apace of their journey and experiences, ensure that you check out our travel blog below. Due to the intense travelling involved in this trip, updates will occur whenever opportunity avails. VMC EUROPEAN TOUR 2008 BLOG

 

 

 

 

VMC Students in Sweden: Five VMC students from the school's Sustainable Development Committee were chosen as finalists in the prestigious Volvo Adventure competition for environmental projects. Their project, the Alternative Energy Array, (AEA) will entail the installation of a wind turbine, solar cells and a green roof on the school's roof. The group will be traveling to Sweden, May 9 to 15, 2008 to showcase their project at the international conference.  Top prizes are $10,000, $6,000 and $4,000. Department Mandate

 

The main objective of the Social Studies Program is for the students to develop an understanding of geographic issues and Canadian / World History which will allow them to better interpret and analyze past, present, as well as, future national and international events.

 

 

At the Grade 12 level, students can choose courses in Western Civilization, Human Geography, and World issues which will allow them to gain an understanding of their role and responsibility in the global community.
